After your arrival in Australia, it is likely that public transport will be one of the first services that you will use, so here we have gathered some essential information for you regarding Australian public transport.

Although there are many cars on the road in Australia due to the vast distances, major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide have well-developed and accessible public transport networks available for all travellers. Like many other things in Australia, public transport systems vary by state and territory, so we recommend checking in advance for the specifics of your destination city.

If Sydney is your destination and you plan to use public transport during your visit, you will need an OPAL card, which is Sydney’s smartcard system. The OPAL card allows you to use various modes of transport across Sydney, including buses, trams, metro, trains, and ferries. You just need to validate your card when you board and disembark from the vehicle, and the fare will be automatically deducted from your balance.

If you’re traveling from Hungary, you can pick up your OPAL card at our Budapest office before your trip. Alternatively, if you’ve booked accommodation in one of our student houses in Sydney, you can also collect your card from our staff upon check-in.

Our OPAL cards come preloaded with 20 AUD, which will cover your first few trips in Sydney. You can easily top up the card with any amount via the mobile app or at ticket machines, railway stations, and newsagents.
