The Australian education system starts with 12-year basic education comprised of primary and high school for 8 and 4 years, respectively. Depending on their entrance exam results, High school graduates may choose to further their studies by enrolling in either a vocational or a university course.

It is also possible to apply to certain university courses after completing vocational training in a relevant field, and by doing that, universities may shorten the duration of their degree programs depending on the relevancy and length of the previous vocational course. This arrangement is called Recognition of Prior Learning, or RPL.

If you are under the age of 18, you can join an Australian secondary school, and if you plan higher education studies in Australia later, it is a good option to finish secondary school here and take the Australian final exams because it is easier to meet the entry requirements that way.

Main course types:

1. English language courses:

If you want to study English in Australia, you can choose to enrol in either a general English course, various exam preparatory courses, or advanced English courses focused on different professions. With only international students in these classes, learning English becomes fast and effective. You’ll also experience what it’s like to be part of an international community where you can become friends with people from all over the world. Most General English courses start every week so you can join in whenever you want, and the length of the course is also flexible, and can be tailored to your learning needs. Anyone can apply, with no age limits or previous study requirements.

 2. Vocational courses:

These courses generally last 0.5 to 2.5 years, depending on the intensity of the curriculum and the level of the qualification. There is a wide range of professions to choose from. The most popular ones are business courses, but you can also study tourism, catering, finance, healthcare, IT, sport, or even trades in the building, hospitality or automotive industries. The basic requirement to enrol in vocational courses is to have at least an intermediate level of English knowledge. If you don’t yet have the necessary English level, you may also be admitted to the vocational school of your choice by first applying to an English language course.

3. Higher education courses:

In Australia, you can further your studies at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels in a wide range of fields. Qualifications obtained here are internationally recognized and held in high regard. Furthermore, you might have the option to qualify for a two-year post-study work visa upon completion of your bachelor or master degree qualification in Australia.

Package deal programmes:

It is not uncommon for those intending to study in Australia to want to complete multiple courses consecutively as a
‘package’ deal. This approach allows the applicant to receive a student visa for the entire duration of the chosen program, which can sometimes last up to 4 or 5 years. 

With a package deal it is not necessary to pay the entire tuition fee in advance; paying only a deposit is sufficient. For example, enrolling in a preparatory English course in a package with a 2 year vocational Diploma course can waive the English requirement and allow the student to start the vocational course with an enhanced English proficiency. Or, completing a relevant vocational level course before continuing at a bachelor degree can help the student to get accustomed to study in Australia and reduce the risk of failure. Even more, a completed Diploma program can be credited toward a 3-year bachelor degree program, thereby reducing the academic study load without losing valuable time in getting that degree.
